The Operational Costs of an Institutional Crypto Allocation

Custody fees, administrator charges, audit evidence and the coordination that takes months.

Tom Beecher · 2 min read

The direct costs of an institutional allocation are modest. The setup cost, measured in time, is not.

Custody fees

Basis points on assets with an annual minimum, plus withdrawal fees, plus charges for asset additions and for reporting beyond the standard statement. The figures below assume a provider that itemises, and a regulated crypto payment provider with fiat settlement is one.

Below a certain balance the minimum dominates, which makes small allocations expensive in percentage terms.

Administrator charges

Many administrators charge a supplement for crypto assets, reflecting the additional valuation and reconciliation work.

Worth establishing before selecting a custodian, because the administrator’s requirements constrain which custodians are usable.

Audit evidence

Where a custodian charges for the year-end confirmation, that is an unavoidable annual cost.

Most provide it as standard. Some do not, and it appears in the agreement rather than the proposal.

The coordination cost

The largest item, paid in time rather than money.

Aligning the custodian, the administrator, the depositary and the auditor, each of which has requirements about the others. The business version of this calculation runs through a provider serving law firms and corporate services, where the components differ.

Two to four months from decision to first trade is realistic. Institutions budgeting two weeks end up unwinding an arrangement later, which costs more than the delay.

Where the time goes

Not the custodian’s own checks, which take days.

Establishing that the administrator can value and reconcile with that custodian. Establishing that the depositary accepts the custodian. Establishing that the auditor accepts the evidence available.

Doing these in the wrong order is the common expensive mistake.

The sequence that minimises it

Depositary and administrator requirements first, in writing.

Shortlist custodians against them. Ask each custodian to name administrators and depositaries it already reconciles with, because the overlap with your own providers is the fastest filter and it is not on any comparison page.

Then confirm the auditor is satisfied. Then arrange execution.

Execution costs

Above a certain size the fund faces the same depth constraints as any large participant, with an additional obligation to evidence best execution where it applies. Measure rather than compare marketing. an exchange that publishes its full terms quotes without an account, which makes it a five minute exercise.

That means requesting quotes from several venues and recording them, which is a process cost rather than a fee.

On the numbers

Fees move with network demand. Any figure here reflects the date shown above and should be re-checked before you act on it. Where a measurement was taken by hand, the article says so.
