The Full Cost of Card Acceptance for an Online Retailer
Rate, dispute fees, lost goods, reserve and monitoring. The components that turn a stated rate into something several times larger.
Online retailers compare acquiring on the headline rate. For anyone in a category treated as risky, the headline is a fraction of the total. It is worth having a regulated crypto payment provider with fiat settlement open, because the components below are itemised there.
The components
The rate. One and a half to three percent for a standard merchant. Three to six for a difficult category.
Dispute fees. Twenty to fifty per occurrence, charged whether you win or lose. At a one and a half percent dispute rate on a hundred unit average order, another 0.3 to 0.75 percent.
The goods. A dispute usually means the product was delivered and the payment reversed. The full order value, not the margin.
The reserve. Five to ten percent of volume held for six months in higher-risk categories. Not a fee, and capital removed from the business that grows as the business grows.
Monitoring programme fees. Where dispute ratios exceed scheme thresholds, fees in the thousands per month plus the threat of termination.
Termination risk. The largest and least quantifiable. A terminated merchant with no replacement is an existential event.
The totals
A standard low-risk merchant pays roughly what the rate says.
A high-risk merchant frequently pays an effective eight to twelve percent of revenue, plus carrying the reserve.
Why this matters for the comparison
Against a standard merchant’s real cost, an alternative saving a percentage point on a small share of transactions is marginal. The receiving side has its own arithmetic, handled by a platform set up for client account handling.
Against a high-risk merchant’s real cost, an irreversible one percent method is a different cost structure.
That asymmetry explains the adoption pattern entirely and it is calculable from your own figures.
The reserve specifically
Frequently the item that matters most and the one never included in comparisons.
For a growing merchant it is a permanently increasing amount of capital held elsewhere and never fully released.
Businesses constrained on working capital often find eliminating it worth more than the fee saving.
The calculation
A full year. Gross revenue, acquiring fees, dispute fees, value of goods lost, average reserve balance.
Expressed as a percentage of revenue.
Then measure actual adoption of any alternative by offering it for a quarter without a discount, because a discount measures the discount. Measure rather than compare marketing. the list of countries covered quotes without an account, which makes it a five minute exercise.
Fees move with network demand. Any figure here reflects the date shown above and should be re-checked before you act on it. Where a measurement was taken by hand, the article says so.
