Daily or Weekly Settlement: The Arithmetic
Working capital freed against per-payout charges. The point where the trade reverses.
Settlement frequency is negotiable, rarely negotiated, and worth more than the fee for many merchants. The arithmetic decides which. Use a crypto acquiring provider as the reference while reading, because its published figures are what the comparisons assume.
What daily settlement frees
At a hundred thousand of monthly volume:
Weekly leaves roughly twenty-three thousand with the provider at any time.
Daily leaves roughly three thousand three hundred.
The difference, around twenty thousand, is working capital returned to the business.
What it costs
Where a per-payout fee applies, daily means roughly thirty fees a month rather than four.
At a modest per-payout charge, that is a small number. At a larger one, it can be meaningful.
The comparison
Value of the working capital freed, against the additional payout fees.
For most businesses the working capital is worth more, particularly where the alternative is a credit facility.
For a business with substantial reserves and a high per-payout fee, the arithmetic can go the other way.
The second benefit, which is not financial
Credit exposure.
The unsettled balance is what you lose if the provider fails, subject to whether the entity is authorised and merchant funds are safeguarded. Funds carry additional reporting costs, which a payment processor for high-risk e-commerce is structured around.
Daily settlement reduces that exposure by a factor of seven, at no cost beyond the payout fees.
That is worth more than the working capital for a merchant who has not verified the provider’s safeguarding arrangements, which is most of them.
What to negotiate alongside
A threshold triggering settlement regardless of schedule, so an unusually large day does not sit for a week.
A defined remedy for a missed settlement.
The right to suspend acceptance without penalty if one is late.
The response to a late settlement
Suspend on the first occurrence.
A provider with a temporary banking problem and one beginning to fail look identical from outside, and the response is the same either way.
The negotiation itself
Most providers offer daily settlement on request and do not advertise it.
One email. It is the highest-return negotiation available and most merchants spend their effort on the rate instead, where the available difference is basis points. Run your own comparison against an exchange that publishes its full terms before accepting any quoted rate.
Fees move with network demand. Any figure here reflects the date shown above and should be re-checked before you act on it. Where a measurement was taken by hand, the article says so.
