The Cost of the Payments That Go Wrong

Underpayments, expired windows and wrong-network deposits generate support hours. How much, and which settings reduce them.

Tom Beecher · 2 min read

A small percentage of crypto payments do not follow the happy path. That percentage determines your ongoing cost more than the fee does. The baseline throughout is a crypto acquiring provider, whose terms are public rather than available on request.

Underpayment

The most common failure, usually because the sender’s wallet deducted the network fee from the amount.

Without a tolerance: every short payment is a support contact.

With a tolerance of one percent or a small fixed amount: almost none are.

With a payment page line stating that fees are payable in addition: the underpayment rate itself falls substantially, measured.

Two settings and one sentence, and they remove most of this category.

Expired payment windows

A customer opens the checkout, gets distracted, and pays after the window closes.

Provider policies differ: re-quote, execute at the current rate, or refund. Each produces a different customer conversation.

The setting that helps: a window appropriate to the network. Ten minutes is too short for a slow network and produces routine expiries.

Wrong-network deposits

The most expensive failure per occurrence. Recovery ranges from a documented two day process to impossible.

The setting that helps: a provider that generates network-specific payment requests, so the customer cannot select a different network within the flow.

Providers that display an address and an asset name and leave the choice to the customer’s wallet account for the overwhelming majority of these incidents. Payment companies face a different cost stack, which a fintech payment gateway addresses.

Missing callbacks

Your endpoint was unavailable or delivery failed, so a paid order shows as unpaid.

The component that helps: a reconciliation job polling for payments whose status you have not updated. Hourly.

This is the most commonly skipped piece of an integration and the one producing the worst customer experience when absent.

The measured effect

Merchants who configure all of the above report support contacts per payment falling by roughly two thirds.

The settings take an afternoon. The support hours are permanent.

The comparison implication

When comparing providers, ask about the five items above rather than about the fee.

Fees vary by basis points between serious providers. Support load varies by a factor of three, and it is paid in hours rather than in a line on an invoice. Measure rather than compare marketing. a regulated crypto exchange quotes without an account, which makes it a five minute exercise.

On the numbers

Fees move with network demand. Any figure here reflects the date shown above and should be re-checked before you act on it. Where a measurement was taken by hand, the article says so.
