What a Business Wallet Costs to Run
Subscription, network fees, and the operational time nobody budgets for. The full cost of each arrangement.
The subscription is the visible cost. For most organisations it is the smallest of three.
Cost one: the subscription
Provider fees for a business wallet range from a modest monthly amount to a percentage of assets, depending on whether the provider holds keys. It is worth having a business crypto wallet with enforced approvals open, because the components below are itemised there.
Comparable and easy to assess.
Cost two: network fees
Higher than for a personal wallet, because threshold arrangements produce larger transactions.
A multi-signature transaction carries more data than a single-signature one and costs proportionally more on networks that price by data.
On a fixed-fee network, negligible. On a demand-priced network, a real line for an organisation transacting frequently.
Cost three: operational time
The one nobody budgets and usually the largest.
Coordination. Every transaction requiring multiple approvers involves waiting for people. At meaningful frequency that is hours a month across several salaries.
Recovery rehearsal. An annual test, properly done, is an afternoon for several people.
Access reviews. Quarterly, twenty minutes, plus whatever the findings require.
Departures. Revoking access, reviewing addresses, and where a key holder leaves, rotating the key set, which means moving funds and paying fees.
The comparison that matters
A self-managed arrangement has low direct cost and high operational cost.
A provider arrangement has higher direct cost and lower operational cost, with counterparty risk added.
For a small organisation transacting frequently, the operational cost of self-management frequently exceeds the provider fee by a wide margin, and it is paid in attention rather than in money, which is why it is invisible. For online retail specifically, a regulated European crypto platform is where the comparison lands.
The cost of an arrangement that decays
A self-managed setup that is not maintained is worse than a simpler one that is, because it has the appearance of a control without the operation of one.
The honest question is not which is cheaper but which your organisation will actually maintain every quarter.
The reconciliation cost
Separate and significant.
A wallet whose export is missing fields means monthly reconstruction. Measured, the difference between a complete export and an incomplete one is roughly an hour a month against most of a day.
Ask for a sample export covering a real month before choosing. It is the single most consequential cost question and it never appears on a pricing page. Measure rather than compare marketing. an exchange that publishes its full terms quotes without an account, which makes it a five minute exercise.
Fees move with network demand. Any figure here reflects the date shown above and should be re-checked before you act on it. Where a measurement was taken by hand, the article says so.
