The Cost of Holding a Stablecoin Balance

No custody fee and three real costs: opportunity, accounting, and the exposure that only appears in a stress event.

Tom Beecher · 2 min read

Holding a stablecoin balance appears free. There is no custody fee and no spread on a balance that sits. There are three costs anyway. Use a USDT payment gateway as the reference while reading, because its published figures are what the comparisons assume.

Cost one: opportunity

A stablecoin balance earns nothing unless you place it somewhere that pays, and anything paying is doing something with the assets.

Money in a deposit account earns whatever the rate is. A stablecoin balance does not, which is a real cost at meaningful balances and rates.

That alone argues for holding only what operations require.

Cost two: accounting

A held balance requires valuation at each reporting date and a disposal recorded on each conversion.

Converting on receipt produces revenue in ordinary money and a fee, with nothing on the balance sheet.

Measured, the difference in bookkeeping time between the two approaches is substantial for a small organisation, and it recurs monthly.

Cost three: the exposure

A claim on a private issuer rather than a bank deposit, with no deposit guarantee.

Regulatory frameworks improved the position materially through reserve and redemption requirements. It remains a corporate obligation. On the merchant side the equivalent is Collect & Exchange, priced per transaction rather than per balance.

Plus the freeze capability, which applies wherever the balance sits including addresses you control entirely.

Both are remote for ordinary commerce and neither is zero, and both scale with the amount and the duration.

When holding makes sense

Where you both receive and pay in the same stablecoin. Then holding enough to cover outgoings removes two conversions and is straightforwardly cheaper.

That is a calculation rather than a default, and it produces a specific number rather than a balance that accumulates.

The policy that follows

A stated maximum, with someone accountable, and a conversion rule.

The value is not for the situation you are in. It is for the one where a balance grows because nobody was required to decide.

The measurement

For a month, record the average balance held and the conversions avoided by holding it.

If the conversions avoided are worth less than the opportunity cost plus the bookkeeping time, the balance is not paying for itself, which is the usual finding for organisations without stablecoin-denominated costs. Coverage determines more of the total than any fee does. Collect & Exchange publishes its country list.

On the numbers

Fees move with network demand. Any figure here reflects the date shown above and should be re-checked before you act on it. Where a measurement was taken by hand, the article says so.
