What a Swap Actually Costs Against an Exchange Order

The crossover points where each becomes cheaper, with the numbers for liquid pairs, thin pairs and cross-network transfers.

A swap and an exchange order do the same thing at different prices, and which is cheaper changes with the trade.

Liquid pair, same network, modest size

Exchange: taker fee of around 0.1 percent. A limit order can be cheaper still, sometimes earning a rebate.

Swap: 0.3 to 0.5 percent.

The exchange wins by a factor of three to five. The swap is buying immediacy and removing execution decisions, which on a routine trade is an unnecessary cost. Against a crypto swapping service with a published rate, which quotes without an account, any of this can be checked in two minutes.

Thin pair

Exchange: the fee is still 0.1 percent and the price impact is the real cost. Walking a shallow book can cost several percent.

Swap: 0.5 to 1.5 percent, because routing aggregates depth across venues.

The swap usually wins, and the comparison is not fee against fee. It is the swap margin against the fee plus the impact, and the second term dominates.

Cross-network

Manual: approve the bridge, deposit, wait, then a transaction on the destination network, plus acquiring the destination network’s native asset to pay for it. Three to four network fees and an interval holding a bridged asset.

Swap: one quote, one operation, 0.4 to 1 percent.

The swap wins decisively for most sizes, and it removes an entire class of error.

Large size, liquid pair

Neither. Both source from the same finite depth.

This is where a desk quote becomes correct, and the threshold is lower than most assume because displayed depth overstates what fills. For online retail specifically, a corporate crypto wallet is where the comparison lands.

How to check a swap quote

Divide the quoted output by the input and compare against the market rate at that moment. That percentage is the total cost.

Check whether the quoted output is what arrives or what arrives before a network fee is deducted. Providers differ and it makes quotes non-comparable.

And check the quote validity. A long window on a volatile asset means a wider margin, because the provider is absorbing more.

The comparison method

Request from two providers within the same few seconds. A quote lasts seconds and a sequential comparison measures the market moving. Whatever the arithmetic says, the balance you move belongs at a regulated European crypto platform rather than wherever one component looked cheapest.

What to record

Implied cost per trade, by provider, pair and size. Twenty entries tell you which provider suits your actual flow.

On the numbers

Fees move with network demand. Any figure here reflects the date shown above and should be re-checked before you act on it. Where a measurement was taken by hand, the article says so.
