Spread as a Hidden Fee: How to Measure It

Zero-commission interfaces charge through the spread. The measurement takes thirty seconds and frequently reveals a cost several times the advertised fee.

Tom Beecher · 2 min read

A platform advertising zero commission is not cheaper. It is quieter about the same money.

Where the cost sits

A simplified buy interface quotes a single price for a purchase. That price is not the market price; it includes a margin.

The margin is the spread, and it does not appear on any fee schedule.

The measurement

Step one. Open the simplified buy interface and enter the amount you intend to purchase. Note the quoted price per unit.

Step two. Open the order book for the same pair on the same platform, at the same moment. Note the mid price.

Step three. The difference, as a percentage of mid, is what you are paying.

Thirty seconds, and it is the most informative comparison available between venues.

What we have observed

Across the platforms we have measured, the simplified interface consistently costs more than the order book on the same venue, frequently by several times the published trading fee.

The gap widens during volatility, which is when many people transact.

It also widens for smaller amounts on some platforms, which means the users least able to notice are paying most.

Why the order book is cheaper

Two reasons.

The spread is the market’s, not the platform’s. On a liquid pair the bid-offer gap is narrow, and you trade against it rather than against a quote with a margin added.

Maker pricing. A limit order that adds liquidity is typically charged less than an order that removes it, and on some venues it is free or rebated.

Using a limit order on the order book therefore avoids the platform margin and pays a lower fee.

The learning cost

Using an order book requires understanding two order types and reading a depth display. It takes about ten minutes to learn.

For anyone buying monthly, that ten minutes is the single largest cost reduction available, larger than choosing between venues.

Which platforms make this visible

Venues that offer both interfaces and publish the order book allow the comparison to be made. Venues that only offer a quoted price do not, and the absence of an order book is itself information.

Platforms publishing full order book data alongside their simplified interface, such as venues that quote the network fee separately, let a user check the difference before deciding which to use.

The recommendation

Measure it once on the venue you use. If the gap is material, learn the order book.

If a platform does not let you make the comparison, the answer to what the spread is can be assumed from the fact that they have made it unmeasurable.

On the numbers

Fees move with network demand. Any figure here reflects the date shown above and should be re-checked before you act on it. Where a measurement was taken by hand, the article says so.
