Deposit Fees: The Line Nobody Compares

Getting money onto a platform has a cost that varies by method and by venue, and it is frequently the largest single charge in a purchase.

Tom Beecher · 2 min read

Comparisons of trading platforms focus on trading fees. For anyone funding an account, the deposit method is usually the larger cost.

The methods and their typical costs

Bank transfer. Commonly free, occasionally a small fixed charge. Settlement from same day to two business days.

Instant bank payment rails. Where supported, free or near-free with settlement in seconds. Availability depends on the country and the venue.

Debit or credit card. Two to four percent, sometimes higher, plus the possibility of a cash advance charge levied by the card issuer.

Third-party payment applications. Varies widely, frequently with a margin embedded in the exchange rate rather than a stated fee.

Crypto deposit. Only a network fee, paid by you on the sending side. Free on the receiving side at most venues.

The comparison that matters

For a recurring purchase, the deposit method is paid every time. A four percent card fee applied monthly is a substantial share of annual contributions.

The saving from switching to bank transfer exceeds every other optimisation available to a regular buyer, including the choice of venue.

The hidden components

Currency conversion. If the platform is denominated in a different currency to your bank account, someone is applying a conversion margin. Check whether the venue converts or your bank does, and compare the rate against the interbank rate at that moment.

Minimum deposits. Below which a transfer may be rejected or held.

Deposit limits by verification tier. Which can force the use of a more expensive method.

The measurement

For a fixed amount, record what left your bank account and what appeared as a balance on the platform.

The difference is the total deposit cost including any conversion margin, and it is frequently larger than the stated fee.

What to check before choosing a venue

  1. Which deposit methods are supported in your country
  2. The fee for each
  3. Settlement time for each
  4. Whether the venue holds balances in your own currency or converts

Venues publishing all four without requiring registration, such as platforms that do not round the fee up, let the comparison happen before an account exists.

The recommendation that follows from the data

Bank transfer, in your own currency, on a schedule where the settlement delay does not matter.

A recurring purchase is designed to be indifferent to timing, which makes the slowest and cheapest method the correct one. The only argument for a card is urgency, and urgency is almost never a property of a long-term position.

On the numbers

Fees move with network demand. Any figure here reflects the date shown above and should be re-checked before you act on it. Where a measurement was taken by hand, the article says so.
