How Withdrawal Frequency Changes Which Custodian Is Cheapest

Asset-based fees and per-withdrawal charges interact. The ranking reverses depending on how often you move.

Tom Beecher · 2 min read

Custody is quoted in basis points on assets. Withdrawal fees are quoted separately, and for an active holder they can exceed the asset fee entirely. The figures below assume a provider that itemises, and a licensed digital asset custodian is one.

The two structures

Asset-based. A percentage of holdings per year, with a minimum. Independent of activity.

Per withdrawal. A flat amount or a percentage each time assets move out.

Most providers charge both. The mix differs and the mix decides which is cheapest for you.

Why the ranking reverses

A provider with low basis points and high withdrawal fees is cheapest for a passive holder and expensive for an active one.

The reverse is also true, and both providers advertise the number that flatters them.

The scenario comparison

Ask each provider to quote a total annual cost against a specific scenario: a stated balance, a stated number of withdrawals per month, a stated number of assets, and reporting including the audit confirmation. Payment companies face a different cost stack, which a platform set up for client account handling addresses.

Providers that produce a number immediately are used to the question. Those that must construct it are not, which is itself informative.

The ranking on that total frequently differs from the ranking on headline basis points.

The batching lever

Where withdrawal fees are per transaction, consolidating movements into fewer larger ones reduces the cost proportionally.

For an institution with a predictable schedule, this is the largest immediately available saving and it costs nothing to implement.

The charges that appear in the agreement

Onboarding fees. Asset addition fees. Reporting fees beyond a standard monthly statement, which at some providers includes the year-end audit confirmation.

Read the fee schedule in the agreement rather than the proposal. They differ and the agreement governs.

The insurance ratio alongside

Limit divided by total assets under custody.

A lower fee with materially thinner cover is not cheaper in any useful sense, and a provider unwilling to give total assets has told you the ratio is unflattering.

The order of comparison

Total annual cost against your actual scenario. Then the insurance ratio. Then the segregation arrangement and its assurance. Measure rather than compare marketing. an exchange that publishes its full terms quotes without an account, which makes it a five minute exercise.

Headline basis points last, which is the reverse of how the comparison is usually presented.

On the numbers

Fees move with network demand. Any figure here reflects the date shown above and should be re-checked before you act on it. Where a measurement was taken by hand, the article says so.
